What Is LTL Shipping?
LTL, or less than truckload, shipping is precisely what it sounds like – smaller loads that do not fill the entire trailer. They tend to weigh between 150 pounds and 20,000 pounds (some carriers limit LTL freight to a maximum of 15,000 pounds).
LTL shipping companies accept smaller loads from multiple shippers to fill each trailer. Each shipper is responsible for a portion of the trailer cost, as well. This offers lower rates and ensures that you’re able to move loads that are too small to occupy the entire trailer, but too large for other shipping options.
How Do LTL Shippers Operate?
Unlike truckload shippers, LTL shippers follow what’s called a hub-and-spoke model. Trucks move between distribution centers (hubs) and local terminals (the spokes), picking up shipments from terminals and delivering them to distribution centers, where they are consolidated.
Truckload shipping often sees shipments handled just a few times – loading onto the truck and then unloading at the destination. In comparison, LTL shipping requires that shipments are handled multiple times during the process. This can increase the chance of damage due to mishandling and accidents, which makes it critical to choose a trusted, reliable freight company.
At ATN LLC, we work with proven experts who are committed to protecting the freight entrusted to their care. Our partners use a variety of techniques to reduce the risk your shipment faces, including:

Why Consider LTL Shipping?
LTL shipping offers critical benefits to many of our clients including the following:
- Cost Savings – LTL shipping is more cost-effective than other options for clients with smaller loads that would not justify an entire trailer.
- Ship What You Want – LTL shipping allows you to ship even small quantities from coast to coast without needing a full trailer load.
- Secure – Our industry-expert partners ensure your freight is secure and protected throughout its journey.
- Additional Services – Our partners can also provide inside pickup/delivery, expediting of your shipments, liftgates, and other services as needed.
- Better for the Planet – LTL shipping consolidates multiple small loads into a single trailer, reducing emissions and road congestion compared to shipping each order separately.
